What Is A Prosthodontist

Prosthodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).   It is the discipline of dentistry that pertains to the restoration of oral function, comfort, appearance, and oral health by restoring natural teeth and replacing missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes.

There are three main branches of prosthodontics:

  • Fixed Prosthodontics - (Crowns and Bridges that are placed in the mouth and are not taken out by the patient.)
  • Removable Prosthodontics - (Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures that are removable by the patient for cleaning on a daily basis. For many patients who wear removable partial dentures or complete dentures, implants are used to “help” hold them in place.)
  • Maxillofacial Prosthetics - Rehabilitation of patients with disabilities of the head and neck secondary to acquired and congenital defects.  These disabilities can range from minor cosmetic discrepancies to a major functional disability combined with cosmetic disfigurement

Dr. Feit completed an ADA accredited training program at Boston University in fixed and removable Prosthodontics; then continued his training at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for Maxillofacial Prosthetics. Each year he and Dr. Jonas attend a number of continuing education courses to ensure that all of their patients receive the best possible care.  Extensive training and experience provide Dr. Feit and Dr. Jonas with special understanding of the dynamics of a smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth, and the creation of tooth replacements.

Complex dental issues require special attention and the abilities of a prosthodontist, like Dr. Feit, to restore optimal oral health and function. Serving as the architect of a dental treatment plan, the prosthodontist collaborates with general dentists, dental specialists (endodontists, oral surgeons, and periodontists) and other health professionals to develop solutions for oral health issues.
